Shelf Road Recreation Area is a world-renowned rock climbing destination managed by the BLM, featuring more than 800 limestone sport climbing routes in multiple canyon canyons. Located about 20 miles north of Cañon City on the historic "Shelf Road" (an old stage coach route), this area also offers excellent mountain biking, camping, and hiking. The Bank and Cactus Cliff areas are particularly popular with intermediate and advanced climbers.
