Rafting the Arkansas River Near Royal Gorge: Your Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River near Cañon City — which section to choose, the best outfitters, and what to expect.

The Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge region is one of the most diverse whitewater rivers in the United States. Within a 40-mile stretch near Cañon City, you'll find everything from mellow family float trips to Class V rapids that challenge expert paddlers.

The Two Main Sections

Royal Gorge Section (Class IV–V) The premier run — 10 miles of continuous whitewater through 1,000-foot granite walls. Flows are most aggressive May–July during snowmelt.

Who it's for: Physically fit adults with prior whitewater experience, or first-timers on guided trips. Children under 16 are typically not permitted.

Best time: May–July for high-flow intensity; August–September for more moderate levels.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon Section (Class II–III) A 16-mile stretch upstream from Cañon City offering sustained but manageable whitewater. Named for the bighorn sheep frequently spotted on the canyon walls. Right choice for families with children and beginners.

Who it's for: Families, first-timers, groups with mixed experience levels.

Best time: May–September.

Choosing an Outfitter

Royal Gorge Rafting (royalgorgerafting.net, (719) 275-7238) — One of the longest-running operations on the river, with excellent safety records and professional guides. Offers both Royal Gorge and Bighorn sections.

Echo Canyon River Expeditions (raftecho.com) — Running since the 1970s, with strong family programs and a full range of trip options.

Both outfitters operate from US-50 west of Cañon City near the gorge entrance.

Practical Information

Season: April 15 – September 30. Peak season is Memorial Day through Labor Day.

What's included: All trips include guide, raft, paddle, PFD, and helmet.

What to wear: Synthetic or wool layers, sandals with heel straps or water shoes. No cotton — it stays wet and causes hypothermia.

Reservations: Strongly recommended for summer weekends. Book 1–2 weeks in advance for July.

Water Levels

The Arkansas is fed by Rocky Mountain snowmelt, with peak flows typically in late May and early June. By late August, flows drop to 300–500 CFS — more technical but still excellent.

Current flow data: USGS stream gauge station at Parkdale provides real-time levels.
